Program Overview
Introduction to the Week of Welcome Program
The Week of Welcome (WOW) is a 65-year-old tradition at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, designed to help new students kick off their university journey. This dynamic collection of activities, events, and programs aims to deepen students' connections to campus life, resources, and the Cal Poly community.
Program Overview
WOW is the official beginning of the university experience for new students, taking place in the days leading up to the fall semester. The program includes a variety of fun and exciting activities, such as:
- Meeting new and current students to form friendships
- Participating in community-building activities and intentional conversations
- Engaging in interactive events
- Discovering how to get connected and involved at Cal Poly through the Club Showcase
- Navigating the college experience with tips from advisors on academic success
Program Structure
Each WOW group is led by two current Cal Poly students, known as Orientation Leaders, who guide new students through the program. The daily schedule includes:
- Check-in with the WOW group
- Socials and activities
- Required presentations and programs
- Community building
- Ample break time
Information for Parents and Supporters
Unlike SLO Days, the Week of Welcome is only for students. However, after moving in, parents and supporters are invited to join the Parent and Family Programs team for Evening with the President, an opportunity to mingle with university leadership.
Registration and Fees
New students register for WOW when they sign up for SLO Days. The WOW fee covers access to workshops, presentations, materials, schedules, and program staffing. Additional costs may include:
- A minimum of $40 cash for off-campus activities planned by WOW leaders
- Meals not included in the Campus Dining meal plan during the week
History and Evolution
The Week of Welcome has a rich history, dating back to 1901 when Cal Poly was founded. Over the years, the program has evolved, with significant developments in the 1950s and 1960s. Today, WOW is a comprehensive program that introduces new students to the community, campus resources, and important issues they may encounter during their university experience.
Leadership and Awards
The Week of Welcome has a strong leadership team, with Orientation Leaders, Team members, and Board members working together to make the program a success. The program has received numerous awards, including:
- "Raising Awareness Sexual Assault Education within Orientation Programs" presentation
- Region II Showcase Award for Outstanding Presentation
- NODA Association for Orientation, Transition & Retention in Higher Education awards
