Single Subject Program

Program Overview

The Single Subject Teaching Credential program follows a cohort model and traditional schedule.


Program Coursework

Teacher candidates will be expected to participate in coursework on the Cal Poly campus or time spent in their clinical placement classroom throughout San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara County during the day hours Monday through Friday. All courses and clinical practice placements are offered in person only.

Credential Completion Requirements

Applicants must satisfy all of the following requirements for the Five-Year Single Subject Preliminary Teaching Credential by the completion of the program:


  1. Completion of a baccalaureate or higher degree, except in professional education, from a regionally accredited institution
  2. Completion of the Subject Matter Competency (CSET or Approved Subject Matter Program)
  3. Demonstration of knowledge of the principles and provisions of the Constitution of the United States
  4. Successful completion of Single Subject Credential Program coursework and Clinical Practice in addition to:
  • Google Level 1 Certificate of Completion
  • HLTH 250/1150 Healthy Living in a Modern World - Personal health with emphasis on healthful behavioral practices Psychosocial, injury, sexual health, infectious and non-infectious diseases, the United States health care system, and environmental health.
  • CPR Certification - Must include all three: adult, child, and infant training, follow the American Heart Association or American Red Cross guidelines, and be valid at the time of credential recommendation.
  1. Pass the Teacher Performance Assessment (EdTPA)
  2. Complete the SOE Exit Survey
  3. Submit a Credential Request Application to the School of Education

Additional Requirements

  1. Completion of Mandated Reporter Training
  2. Evidence of completion of the speaking and writing competencies requirement (met through the Professional Aptitude Interview)
