Introduction to the BEACoN Program

The BEACoN program, which stands for Believe, Educate and Empower, Advocate, Collaborate, Nurture, offers research opportunities to underrepresented students. The program officially began in 2018 and is overseen by the Office of University Diversity and Inclusion.

Program Details

Students from any major can apply to become BEACoN Research Scholars, earning stipends of $2,000 per quarter to engage in research with a Cal Poly faculty mentor. The program provides students with the opportunity to gain research experience, develop lifelong skills, and expand their horizons.

Research Areas

BEACoN Research Scholars have worked on various projects, including:

  • Analyzing ancient bacterial strains for their potential to produce new antibiotics
  • Creating strength-based resources for math students to learn outside of class
  • Examining parent-infant interactions for healthy child development
  • Exploring instructional concepts related to derivatives in calculus
  • Investigating the role of campus cultural organizations in shaping teaching aspirations

Program Structure

The program includes a summer research component, where students can participate in the Frost Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) with funding provided by Bailey College donors through the Undergraduate Research Fund. Donor support will provide even more opportunities for Bailey College students to participate in BEACoN in future winter and spring quarters.

Benefits

The BEACoN program provides students with the opportunity to:

  • Gain research experience and develop lifelong skills
  • Work with faculty mentors and peers from diverse backgrounds
  • Present their research at the BEACoN Research Symposium
  • Receive stipends to support their research endeavors
  • Develop confidence and self-assurance in their abilities as researchers and scientists

Testimonials

BEACoN Research Scholars have reported positive experiences with the program, citing gains in knowledge, confidence, and skills. The program has also provided students with the opportunity to work on projects that align with their interests and career goals.

Faculty Involvement

Faculty members play a crucial role in the BEACoN program, serving as mentors and guides for the Research Scholars. They provide support and guidance throughout the research process, helping students to develop their skills and achieve their goals.

Program Impact

The BEACoN program has the potential to make a significant impact on the lives of underrepresented students, providing them with the opportunity to develop their skills, gain research experience, and pursue their career goals. By supporting the BEACoN program, donors can help to create a more diverse and inclusive research community, where students from all backgrounds can thrive and succeed.
