About this Course

Floods have accounted for over half of the total water-related disasters, resulting in significant casualties and financial losses globally. The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) developed the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction to mitigate disaster-related losses. The framework has seven targets and four priorities for action, with Target 7 focusing on increasing the availability of and access to multi-hazard early warning systems. Flood early warning systems (FEWS) are a crucial strategy for flood risk mitigation, and there is a need for increased awareness among practitioners, policymakers, and stakeholders about the basics of FEWS, their latest advances, and challenges.

What you will Learn

After completing the course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the key components of a flood early warning system and their unique functions in the flood early warning process.
  • Understand the main weaknesses in operational flood forecasting, warning, and response actions.
  • Enhance knowledge on the advanced technologies involved in the four components of a flood early warning system. Specific knowledge and skills gained include:
    • Key concepts underpinning flood forecasting and early warning.
    • International efforts in flood risk mitigation through FEWS.

Target Audience

The target audience for this course includes professionals, government officials, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), humanitarian groups, community leaders, postgraduate students, and international organizations seeking in-depth knowledge in FEWS.
