Course Details
One of the courses offered is 30.120 Design & Manufacturing, which provides exposure to current industrial processes and practices used to manufacture products. The course covers topics such as process physics and control, design for manufacturing, and manufacturing systems.
Learning Objectives
The learning objectives of the course include:
- Applying fundamental principles in the design and production of engineered products
- Defining and explaining the attributes of manufacturing processes, machines, or systems
- Incorporating the ideas of variation to factors that control production rate and influence quality, cost, and flexibility
- Recognizing the role of control in processes and systems
- Working in teams, communicating technical ideas, and presenting an integrated report
Measurable Outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Design a mechanical part, plan the machining process, and machine it
- Understand the attributes of manufacturing processes or systems
- Model manufacturing process physics
- Predict optimal process parameter windows
- Recognize the flexibility of a process and its impact on the manufacturing system
- Work in teams effectively, including project planning and presentation of an integrated report
Pedagogy
The course includes instructor-led discussions, breakout group activities, and project work completed outside of lesson time. Homework assignments are completed individually, and exams are written.
Text and References
The course uses the following texts and references:
- S. Kalpakjian, Manufacturing Engineering and Technology, 7th ed.
- D. C. Montgometry, Introduction to Statistical Quality Control
- Machinery's Handbook, Industrial Press
Grading
The grading for the course is as follows:
- 20% Mid-Term Exam
- 30% End-of-Term Exam
- 50% Design, laboratory, and homework assignments
Prerequisite
The prerequisite for the course is 10.015 Physical World.
Policies
