Program Overview


Introduction to Canine Behavior and Training Course

The Introduction to Canine Behavior and Training course is a short course designed for those with practical experience in handling and caring for dogs and a keen interest in canine behavior and training. This course combines classroom study with practical sessions at the Northop Campus and the North Clwyd Animal Rescue Center.

What You Will Study

  • Introduction to canine behavior, including body language interpretation, dominance - submission evaluation, socialization, and factors influencing behavior
  • Introduction to learning theory, including associative and non-associative learning processes, key concepts in dog training, techniques, methods, and equipment
  • Key terms and definitions, such as chaining schedules, back-chaining, reinforcement, and more
  • Development of a training plan, including health and safety, timing, incremental steps, operational criteria, and factors that may influence the plan

Admission Requirements and Application

Teaching and Assessment

  • Online Test - includes questions related to canine behavior and development, as well as training techniques and terminology
  • Training Plan - students will develop and implement a training plan using appropriate techniques and technical terms, including a section on health and safety
