M.S. Ed. in Educational Leadership - School Building Leader
The Department of Educational Leadership offers a 36-credit program leading to a Master of Science degree in educational leadership. Successful program completion leads to institutional recommendation for certification as a School Building Leader or School District leader, depending upon candidate qualifications.
Program Overview
The program schedule is designed around students' busy lives with family, job, and other responsibilities. Most courses meet in the late afternoon and evening, with many offering online segments. Other courses are scheduled during a condensed five-week summer session or on weekends during the spring and fall semesters.
Program Details
- Candidates who complete the program receive a Master of Science Degree in Educational Leadership and are eligible for institutional recommendation for New York State certification as a School Building Leader (SBL) or School District Leader (SDL).
- Successful degree completion may lead to eligibility for New Jersey Superintendent certification.
- Graduates of this program seeking SBL certification have excellent opportunities for employment in a variety of school leadership roles.
- Graduates of this program earning SDL certification may find positions in central office positions, such as Assistant Superintendent or District Superintendent.

- EDL 650: Internship in School Administration Master's level (6 credits)

- EDL 653: Administration and Leadership at the Middle School Level (3 credits)
- EDL 654: Leadership in Standards-Based Curriculum (3 credits)
Culminating Experiences
The program includes a portfolio and internship project as culminating experiences.
NYS Certification Requirements
To be eligible for NYS certification, students must complete the following requirements:
- Child Abuse Seminar
- Project SAVE Seminar
- DASA Seminar
- NYS fingerprint clearance
- School Building Leader examination (Parts 1 and 2)
- Educating All Students Test
- School District Leader examination (Parts 1 and 2)
Admissions Requirements
To be admitted to the program, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA
- Initial state certification in teaching or an educational specialty
- Two letters of recommendation
- Teaching, administration, pupil personnel, or other appropriate experience
