Program Overview
BS Nursing Program
The BS Nursing program is designed for individuals seeking a career in nursing, offering a broad range of roles and options in meeting the health needs of individuals, families, communities, and populations. The program prepares new nurses through two tracks: a full-time day track and an accelerated 2nd degree track.
Program Tracks
- Full-time day track: Applications are accepted twice a year in the Fall and Spring Semester.
- Accelerated 2nd degree track: A 16-month program for students who already hold a baccalaureate degree in another field, offering admission in the Summer, Spring, and Fall.
Admissions Requirements
First-Year Students
- Minimum high school GPA of 85%
- High School Science and Math grades B or higher (85% or higher in each math and science course)
Transfer Students
- College GPA of 3.0 or better (85% or higher) for all work done at other colleges
- If taken, prerequisite coursework grade must be a 3.0/B/85% or higher
- Students dismissed from a Nursing program are not admissible to LIU Nursing
Math & Science Prerequisite Coursework Requirements
- Coursework must be completed within 5 years of the term enrolled
- Coursework grade of 3.0/B/85% or higher
- Prerequisite coursework does not need to be completed to receive an admission decision but must be completed before enrolling in Nursing classes

Accelerated Nursing BS Track
- Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited institution
- Bachelor's Degree GPA of 3.3/B+/88% or higher
- Minimum of 63 transferable core/liberal arts and ancillary course credits
- Prerequisite coursework and requirements must be completed prior to admission

Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs)

Clinical Placement Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for clinical placement, students must:
- Have an active LIU Castlebranch account
- Complete required health forms, including annual physical exam, titers, and vaccinations
- Pass a background check and drug screen
- Complete HIPAA and OSHA certification courses
- Complete an American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers Course
Progression Criteria
Students must achieve a C or better in all nursing courses and maintain a minimum nursing and overall GPA of 2.75. All science courses must have been completed within 5 years of acceptance to the program.

Upon completion of the program, graduates will be able to:
- Integrate knowledge from the liberal arts and sciences into professional nursing care.
- Identify principles of leadership and management for quality improvement and patient safety.
- Integrate evidence-based best practices into professional nursing practice.
- Use information technology ethically to support evidence-based practice and decision-making.
- Examine healthcare, financial, and regulatory policies that influence the practice of professional nursing.
- Collaborate with members of the interprofessional team to improve communication and provide patient-centered care.
- Provide population-based professional nursing care that integrates concepts of demographics, social determinants of health, and health promotion.
- Demonstrate professionalism and accountability in nursing practice, applying professional values of altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, and social justice.
- Apply knowledge, skills, and attitudes using clinical reasoning to develop nursing interventions that recognize culture, spirituality, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, and sexual orientation.
