Program Overview


Associate of Applied Science in Nursing (ADN) Program

The Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) is a two-year program offered at The University of Akron's Wayne College Campus located in Orrville, Ohio. This program provides students with the foundational knowledge and hands-on clinical experience needed to become a registered nurse (RN). The curriculum covers essential topics such as anatomy, pharmacology, patient care, and medical ethics, preparing graduates to take the NCLEX-RN exam and begin their nursing careers in a variety of healthcare settings.

Partnership with Akron Children's

The University of Akron and Akron Children's have partnered to offer the Associate of Applied Science in Nursing (ADN) degree as part of the Akron Children's Career Launch program. This partnership provides comprehensive support to students, including 100% prepaid tuition, fees for uniforms, books, and supplies, in exchange for a work commitment at Akron Children's upon graduation. Students will receive specialized training in pediatric care, equipping them with the skills to excel in children's health care.


Admission Requirements

The priority deadline to begin coursework in August is June 1, and the priority deadline to begin coursework in January is October 1. All students who meet the minimum requirements for admittance into The University of Akron and intend to major in nursing are accepted into the College of Health and Human Sciences. The School of Nursing conducts a second review of candidates to ensure eligibility for continuation in the major.


Curriculum Guide & Courses

The Nursing - A.A.S. curriculum includes prerequisites such as:


  • BIOL:200 Human Anatomy & Physiology I or ANAT:206 Applied Human Anatomy & Physiology I; 3 credits
  • BIOL:201 Human Anatomy & Physiology Laboratory I or ANAT:210 Applied Human Anatomy & Physiology Lab I; 1 credit
  • ENGL:111 English Composition I; 3 credits
  • PSYC:100 Introduction to Psychology; 3 credits
  • SOCIO:100 Introduction to Sociology; 3 credits

Prerequisites and Additional Requirements

Students must maintain a 2.5 grade point average and earn no less than a C in the prerequisite courses. Transfer students must meet this minimum grade point average using transfer credits from all previous institutions. Additionally, students will need:


  • Current CNA certification or a CNA skills evaluation, or registration for and attendance at the UA ADN Skill Boot Camp, or completion of a patient care assistant course approved by the director of the ADN program.
  • A passing score on HESI (75% on Reading and Math exams) or a minimum ACT score of 22 or SAT score of 1030 and a GPA of 2.75 for any previous coursework.
  • Successful Background Check
  • Urine Drug Screening
  • TB Test
  • Current BLS Certification for the Health Care Provider through the American Heart Association.

International Students

The ADN degree does not meet immigration regulations for a new F-1 student. However, international students in F-1 status who are inside the USA at the time of application may be eligible and should contact the International Center for discussion before applying.
