Undergraduate Accounting Major
The University of Akron's College of Business offers an Undergraduate Accounting Major that provides students with a comprehensive education in accounting principles, practices, and theories. Accounting is the practice of recording and analyzing financial transactions to ensure a business operates efficiently and profitably.
Program Overview
The Undergraduate Accounting Major consists of at least 120 credit hours. Some of the classes included in the curriculum are:
- Accounting Principles I and II
- Principles of Finance
- Accounting Systems and Internal Control
- Business Entity Taxation
- Contemporary Federal Taxation
Degree Programs
The University of Akron's George W. Daverio School of Accounting offers three accounting degree programs:
- Bachelor of Science in Accounting (B.S.)
- Accelerated B.S./M.S.A. Accounting
- Accelerated B.S.A./Master of Taxation (MTax) The accelerated programs allow students to earn an undergraduate degree and graduate degree in approximately 5 years, totaling 150 credit hours, which is the minimum number of credit hours required to test for a CPA license in Ohio.

Accounting interns often do the same type of work that an entry-level, full-time employee would do in a professional organization. In 2021, the average salary for a paid internship was $22.75/hour.

The George W. Daverio School of Accountancy at The University of Akron consists of faculty with a rich history of accounting education and close relationships with the professional community. The faculty includes professors with expertise in taxation, accounting systems, and financial reporting. For example, Julianne Jones is a Professor of Practice in Accounting and the Director of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy, with a JD and MTax from the University of Akron and extensive experience practicing in tax.
