The Joint PhD Program is a collaborative effort between Shanghai University of Technology and Coventry University in the United Kingdom. This program offers students the opportunity to earn a dual doctoral degree in engineering.
Program Overview
- The program duration is 3 years.
- The first year is spent at Shanghai University of Technology, where students engage in coursework and research activities.
- The second year is spent at Coventry University, where students participate in English-taught courses and research activities.
- The third year is spent back at Shanghai University of Technology, focusing on dissertation research.
- Upon successful completion of the program, students can apply for a doctoral degree from both universities.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must meet the requirements for doctoral studies at Shanghai University of Technology, specifically in the field of mechanical engineering.
- Applicants must also meet the admission requirements of Coventry University and pass an interview with Coventry University professors. Failure to pass the interview may result in redirection to another program.
Research Directions
- Advanced Manufacturing: This includes data statistics and analysis related to manufacturing, such as status monitoring data of CNC equipment and production process operation and maintenance.
- New Energy Vehicles: Focus areas include power transmission, energy storage, battery management, and more.

Tuition Fees
- During the time spent at Shanghai University of Technology, students pay tuition according to the university's standard (10,000 CNY per academic year).
- For the year at Coventry University, students receive a full scholarship and a monthly living allowance in British pounds.
Application Process
In addition to the standard application process for doctoral programs at Shanghai University of Technology, applicants must also submit the following materials via email and by postal mail to the Mechanical Engineering College of Shanghai University of Technology:
- A personal introduction in English, not exceeding 2 pages, covering personal learning experience, research aspirations, interests, and career goals.
- Two letters of recommendation in English, with at least one recommender having a deep understanding of the applicant's academic situation.
- Graduate transcript (in English and Chinese).
- English proficiency test scores (TOEFL or IELTS). The TOEFL score must be 85 or higher, and the IELTS score must be 6.5 or higher, with no single band less than 6.
- Other materials that prove the applicant's academic abilities, such as academic papers.
