Program Overview

Medical Student Rotations

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center offers three medical student rotations in general radiology, Interventional radiology, and pediatric radiology. Both the general and Interventional radiology rotations are 4 weeks, while the pediatric radiology rotation is 2 weeks. All rotations are open for third and fourth year medical students at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and outside medical programs.

General Radiology Rotation

Students on the General Radiology 4-week rotation will spend time with faculty and residents on service at Methodist University Hospital. While on this rotation, each student will spend time on each radiology subspecialties including:

• Diagnostic imaging
• Neuroradiology
• Ultrasound
• Nuclear medicine
• Interventional radiology (both non-vascular and vascular sections) Rotating medical students will attend a weekly medical student focused lecture on basic imaging principles. Medical students are encouraged not only to observe, but explore each aspect of the radiology and its integral role in each medical specialty. The rotation schedule is flexible to accommodate more time in certain area of the medical student's specific interest. At the conclusion of the rotation, each student is responsible for a brief presentation highlighting an interesting case or learning experience while on the rotation.

Interventional Radiology Rotation

Students on the Interventional Radiology 4-week rotation will spend most of their time alternating between the non-vascular and vascular interventional radiology sections. Non-vascular interventional radiology procedures are those completed percutaneously with ultrasound or CT guidance including:

• Biopsies
• Drain placements
• Radio frequency ablations Vascular interventional radiology encompasses any procedure requiring vascular access, including:
• IVC placement
• Vascular catheter placement
• Nephrostomy tube placement
• Kyphoplasty
• Chemoembolizations As with the residency program, faculty is highly encouraging of hands-on participation. Medical students will not only observe but will also assist the resident completing daily responsibilities including procedures. Students on this rotation will also be responsible at the end of their rotation for a brief presentation highlighting an interesting case or learning experience while on the rotation.

Pediatric Radiology Rotation

Students on the Pediatric Radiology 2-week rotation will spend time throughout the Le Bonheur Children's Hospital radiology department and learning the nuances of pediatric radiology. Experiences include time spent on each diagnostic modality and subspecialty, including cases utilizing our unique intra-operative MRI scanner. Upon request, time may also be spent at the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, but will require advance notice to obtain security clearance. As with the other rotations, students will be responsible for a brief presentation highlighting an interesting case or learning experience at the end of their rotation.
