Program Overview
Certified Administrative Professional Exam
The Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) exam is a professional certification offered to administrative professionals. The exam is administered by the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) twice per year.
Exam Structure
The CAP exam is a one-part, 350-question test administered for 4.5 hours on the testing dates. Topics covered include:
- Communication
- Organization and Planning
- Information Distribution
- Records Management
- Human Resources
- Document Production
- Financial Functions
- Physical and Information Resources
Career Development Fund
Employees may be eligible for a grant of up to $150 from the Career Development Fund (CDF) to offset the exam fee.
CAP Exam Salary Increase Instructions
Employees who pass the CAP exam are eligible for a nine percent salary increase, as outlined in UT policy HR0465.
Specialties
In addition to the CAP exam, the IAAP also offers specialty exams in:
- Organizational Management (CAP-OM)
- Technology Applications (CAP-TA)
These specialty exams are designed for administrative professionals who wish to advance in these areas.
Eligibility
Non-exempt employees who perform clerical-secretarial or clerical-management duties are eligible to take the CAP exam and receive a salary increase upon passing. A list of eligible job titles is available.
Exam Administration
Beginning in March 2015, the IAAP will offer the exam via a computer-based platform.
