The Summer Institute for Educators is a virtual education outreach program offered by the Center for African Studies.

Program Description

The 2021 Virtual Summer Institute for Educators launched Part I of Voices from the Swahili World, a series of planned workshops and educational experiences throughout the academic year.

Program Details

  • The two-day summer institute took place on Friday, July 30, and Monday, August 2, 2021, from 9:30am to 2:30pm.
  • The program focused on the people and culture of the Swahili Coast through the lens of three ports of call: Lamu, Mombasa, and Zanzibar.
  • The presentations concentrated on the cultural arts (language, poetry, decorative arts, music, food, and dress) of these regions.
  • Participants gained an awareness of the diverse cultural heritage of the Swahili Coast through presentations, participant discussions, and Q&A.

Eligibility and Requirements

  • The institute was open to K-12 educators across disciplines.
  • No fee was required for participation.

Additional Resources

  • Recordings from previous professional development workshops and institutes for educators hosted by Outreach at the Center for African Studies, Howard University, were available for viewing.
  • A bibliography, Voices from the Swahili Coast, was associated with the program.
