Program Overview
Mental Health Ally Training
The Mental Health Ally Training is a simulated and immersive training experience designed for all CSULB faculty and staff. This unique training tool features gamified experiences where faculty and staff players practice genuine empathy, active listening, and facilitating appropriate campus referrals to wellness resources.
Program Details
- The training is available 24/7 asynchronously in both English and Spanish.
- It includes four modules with multiple endings, encouraging repeated play to improve skills.
- Modules increase in intensity and difficulty as players advance.
- Student scenarios presented in the modules were created using data from mental health services on campus, including CARES referrals and Basic Needs assessments.
Training Objectives
The training aims to create a more empathic, confident, and student-ready campus community. By completing the training, faculty and staff will be able to support student mental health more effectively.
Eligibility and Access
- All faculty and staff members on campus are eligible to engage in this training, including state staff, auxiliary staff, Foundation staff, part-time and full-time professional staff, and faculty, and lecturers.
- Access to the training is available through the CSULB SSO.
Training Structure
- The training consists of four modules, each taking approximately 15-45 minutes to complete.
- A score of 4 out of 5 stars is required to advance to the next module.
- Players can return to the game and pick up where they left off.
Assessment and Feedback
- All scores and playthrough data are anonymized to encourage faculty/staff members to play in a fail-safe environment.
- Feedback can be provided after completing each module or after completing all four modules.
Recognition and Incentives
- Upon completing the training, participants will receive a digital badge and email signature graphic, as well as a completion certificate.
- A Mental Health Ally T-shirt and sticker will also be provided.
- Participants who complete the training by April 1, 2026, will be entered into an opportunity drawing for a $50 University Bookstore gift card, with 50 total prizes available.
Additional Resources
- The Beach Wellness website offers information on other campus training options, including the Wellness Ambassador Training, Lunch & Learns, Mental Health First-Aid, campus Ally Trainings, and more.
- A Facilitation Guide is available for group discussions after playing the simulated training experience.
