Program Overview

The Instrumental Jazz program at the university is led by Area Director Jeff Jarvis. It is essential to note that Instrumental Jazz does not accept incoming students for Spring matriculation.

Audition Repertoire

For the prescreen audition, wind players are required to prepare two medium-tempo or up-tempo jazz standards/ťtudes in contrasting styles. The audition will involve performing the melody of the tune and improvising to the chord changes, accompanied by either live musicians or accompaniment tracks provided by the student.

Specific Requirements by Instrument

  • Saxophonists should be prepared to demonstrate woodwind-doubling skills on a jazz or classical ťtude or excerpt.
    • Alto saxophonists are expected to play soprano sax and flute.
    • Tenor saxophonists should be prepared to play clarinet and flute.
    • Baritone saxophonists are required to play bass clarinet and flute.
