The American Language Institute (ALI) at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) offers a specialized English for Trucking program designed to improve communication skills on the road, during inspections, and in emergency situations. This certificate program gives drivers the tools they need to meet federal guidelines, communicate clearly with inspectors and dispatchers, and operate safely and confidently across the U.S.

Program Outline
English for Trucking 1: FMCSA Requirements, Inspections, and Signage
You'll learn to build essential communication skills for roadside inspections and regulatory compliance. This module includes 12 hours of instruction.
- Understanding FMCSA's English language proficiency rules
- 49 CFR § 391.11(b)(2)
- Responding to inspectors' questions about cargo, routes, and vehicle logs
- Recognizing and interpreting standard and electronic traffic signs
- Role-playing roadside inspections
English for Trucking 2: Safety, Forms, and Emergencies
You'll learn to develop the vocabulary and communication skills needed for vehicle checks, documentation, and emergency response. This module includes 12 hours of instruction.
- Pre-trip safety inspections and naming truck parts in English
- Reading and completing logbooks, bills of lading, and official forms
- Describing conditions and damage
- Communicating with dispatchers, shippers, and law enforcement
- Role-playing in emergency scenarios and map-based direction practice
