Program Overview

Beach Academy Program

The Beach Academy is a community of scholars and leaders who demonstrate high potential going into their first year at the university. Every member of the Beach Academy gets connected with a Peer Mentor who will guide them through their first year experience.

Eligibility

Students who are registered for the following courses are automatically considered a part of Beach Academy:

  • ENG/AFRS 100A, CHLS 104A - Composition I
  • ALI 140/145 - American Language Advanced I/II
  • MATH 92A, 94, STAT 90 - Math Support Course

The Beach Academy Experience

The Beach Academy Experience is a guided curriculum that consists of programs, mentoring/coaching, and events that will prepare students to be successful moving forward at the start of their college experience. It is composed of:

  • Bridge to the Beach - a summer residential transition program that will help students get introduced and acclimate to campus
  • Peer Mentoring/Coaching - students will meet with their peer mentor one-on-one and in groups
  • Programs and workshops that will focus on leadership and academic skill building
  • Events to promote and create a sense of belonging and community

Participation

Beach Academy is not required, but highly recommended. Students who participate can benefit highly from the additional support and have a successful and positive college experience.

Peer Mentors

Peer Mentors are assigned to all Beach Academy participants. MAPS Peer Mentors take a life coaching approach to mentoring, focusing on skills that build confidence and self-efficacy in being a good student and a good member of society.

Guided Registration

Guided Registration is an enrollment process where math and writing courses are prioritized over other courses. Students will be able to enroll in their (pre)major and GE courses after they register for their required math and writing courses. It is essential to put the entire schedule together in advance to avoid course conflicts during registration.
