Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Earth and Environmental Sciences (SURFEES)

Program Overview

The SURFEES program is a National Science Foundation-Research Experiences for Undergraduate (NSF-REU) sponsored program that provides 10-15 students from partnering two-year community colleges with the opportunity to engage in faculty-mentored research projects related to earth and environmental issues.


Program Objectives

The objectives of the SURFEES program are to:


  • Provide transformative research experiences to students from two-year institutions that lack substantial research facilities
  • Develop scientifically literate, experienced participants who persist, transfer into and graduate with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) baccalaureate degrees
  • Increase student awareness of the earth and environmental issues and career opportunities in the environmental area

Program Features

The features of the SURFEES program include:


  • Faculty-mentored intensive research in a range of earth and environmental disciplines including biology, chemistry, food science, and geoscience
  • On-campus student apartment housing for full eight weeks of the program
  • Professional development workshops
  • Seminars with faculty speakers and environmental professionals
  • Cohort-building activities and social events
  • Concluding research poster presentation showcase and ceremony
  • $5600 fellowship award

  • Participation in the SURFEES program is limited to students from partnering two-year community colleges.
