Program Overview


Overview of the Biomedical Engineering Program

The Biomedical Engineering discipline was established in 2006 at Hangzhou Dianzi University, originating from the College of Automation's Biomedical Engineering Research Laboratory. The program began recruiting students in 2008 and, by 2010, had evolved into the College of Life Science and Instrument Engineering, integrating disciplines from Hangzhou Dianzi University. This subject offers two undergraduate majors: Biomedical Engineering and Medical Information Engineering. In 2011, it was recognized as a Master of Science Degree granting unit by the Ministry of Education, and by 2014, it had obtained the right to grant Ph.D. degrees in the disciplines of Biological Information Science.

The program aims to train talents with a solid foundation in information science and biomedical engineering, focusing on the application of engineering principles in the medical and health industry. The overall objective is to be at the forefront of biomedical engineering in Zhejiang Province, domestically, and internationally.

The program leverages Hangzhou Dianzi University's advantages in information science and electronics, developing distinct characteristics and advantages in biomedical information processing and application, biological 3D manufacturing, and advanced medical equipment R&D. It has established close cooperative relationships with numerous hospitals and medical equipment enterprises, both domestically and internationally, including Paris-V, the University of Pittsburgh, and Drexel University.

The program emphasizes solid knowledge of biomedical and electronic information technology, practical application in the healthcare industry, and advanced medical equipment research and development. It focuses on training master's and doctoral students who can adapt to the needs of the medical and health industry, with a strong emphasis on information and intelligence.


Subject Orientation

The discipline has formed three major research directions:


  • Biomedical Information Processing and Application: Focuses on the development of key technologies for intelligent medical treatment based on large data, involving tumor and major brain disease diagnosis.
  • 3D Bio Manufacturing Direction: Carries out research on the industrialization of key core technologies for biological 3D printing, including printing materials, biological tissue cell compatibility, and personalized orthopedic implant materials.
  • The Direction of Advanced Medical Instrument Research: Conducts basic and applied research on electronic medical instruments, including high-voltage pulsed electric field non-thermal sterilization technology and low-temperature plasma operating systems.

Domestic and International Impact

Through years of development, the discipline has gained influence in China, with each direction having a certain degree of visibility. Team members have served as directors of professional organizations, indicating the program's impact and recognition within the field.
