Program Overview

The Hunan Normal University International Summer Program is a 12-week program that takes place from May to August. The program is designed to improve Chinese language skills and provide students with the opportunity to experience Chinese campus life at one of China's top universities.

About Changsha

Changsha is a famous cultural city with a long-standing history of more than 3,000 years. It is one of the first batch of historic and cultural cities and one of the first national excellent tourist cities in China. Changsha boasts abundant famous historical sites, such as Yuelu Academy and Mawangdui Han Tomb.

About Hunan Normal University

Hunan Normal University (HNU) is a national '211-project' university since 1996 and a 'double first-class' university since 2017. It ranks 59th among China's top 100 key universities in 2017. HNU campus is located in the foot of Yuelu Mountain and facing the Xiangjiang River, enjoying a quiet and peaceful nature environment.

Program Details

• The program includes intensive language courses, workshops, and lectures.
• Students will complete one academic semester of Chinese in twelve weeks.
• The language classes meet Monday through Friday from 8:30am-11:30 am, with a focus on reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
• Workshops and lectures are often scheduled in the afternoons, and cultural excursions take place on weekends.
• A one-week independent travel break allows students to explore the country on their own.

Activities

The program includes several group trips to historic and cultural sites, such as:

• The Forbidden City
• The Great Wall
• The Summer Palace
• Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
• Changsha City Tour, including Orange Island and Yuelu Academy

Transcripts and Credits

• No credit is granted to students who do not complete the full program.
• A certificate of participation will be presented to each participant, confirming their actual contact hours and subjects.
• Credit transfer is up to the discretion of each participant's home institution.

Housing

• Students will live in a shared suite in Hunan Normal University's International student dormitory.
• Each dorm is equipped with a private washing room, balcony, TV, fridge, telephone, water heater, internet, air-conditioning, and furniture.
• Public laundry, kitchens, and entertainment rooms are also available.

Program Fees

• The program fee is $2200 USD, including tuition, housing, cultural excursions, group dinners, orientation, and cultural activities.
• Health insurance, international flights, and daily meals are not included in the program fee.

Funding and Scholarships

• Eligible students may apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship or the Summer Language Scholarship offered by HNU.
• The maximum scholarship amount is $1100 USD.

Application Information

• Applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of the program start date.
• Individual or university-based group applications are acceptable.
• The program deadline is April 30th, 2019.
