Introduction to the Doctoral Program in Geography

The Geography Science College at Hunan Normal University is launching a doctoral program in 2026, following an "application-assessment" admission process. This program is designed for full-time students with a duration of four years.

Learning Style, Duration, Disciplines, and Supervisors

• The learning style is full-time, with a four-year duration.
• The program offers various disciplines and research directions, which are listed in Table 1.
• Prospective students are required to contact their preferred supervisors before applying to discuss their research interests and the supervisor's availability.

Disciplines and Research Directions

The disciplines and research directions offered in the program include:

• Natural Geography: Global change and ecological response prediction, regional environmental pollution and ecological restoration, flow basin water and soil resources evolution and effect, regional ecological environment change and carbon cycle.
• Human Geography: Regional development and land space planning, economic geography and industrial development, urban geography and new urbanization, rural geography and rural sustainable development, tourism geography and cultural heritage protection.
• Cartography and Geographic Information Systems: Geographic space modeling and analysis, geographic space big data mining and application.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the program, applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Be a full-time master's degree holder or an on-campus full-time master's student with an academic master's degree in geography or related fields.
• Have excellent academic performance during their master's studies, with no record of academic misconduct or disciplinary actions.
• Meet the English language proficiency requirements: a score of 480 or above in the College English Test Band 4, or equivalent English language proficiency certificates, or publications in English international journals as the first author or the second author with the supervisor as the first author.
• Have a strong interest in scientific research, outstanding research capabilities, and a strong sense of innovation, with at least one research paper published in a core journal or above as the first author, or one academic monograph published as the first author, within the past five years.
• Apply for non-directed employment, with a commitment to full-time study.
• Pass a physical and mental health examination according to the regulations.

Application Procedure

Online Application

• The online application period is from February 1, 2026, to February 14, 2026.
• Applicants must submit their application materials, including:
  • A printed copy of the online application form.
  • Master's degree certificate, academic transcript, and other supporting documents.
  • Research achievements, publications, and awards.
  • English language proficiency certificate.
  • A brief introduction to their master's thesis and research progress.
  • A personal statement and research plan.
  • Two recommendation letters from professors or experts in the field.
  • A thought and political situation examination form.

Examination and Evaluation

Qualification Review

• The college will review the applicants' materials and determine the qualified candidates for the examination.
• The list of qualified candidates will be announced on the college's website.

Comprehensive Examination

• The examination will be held from March 7, 2026, to March 9, 2026.
• The examination will include a written test and an interview.
• The written test will account for 30% of the total score, and the interview will account for 70%.
• The examination will assess the applicants' comprehensive knowledge, research capabilities, and language proficiency.

Admission and Announcement

• The college will determine the admission list based on the examination results and announce it on the website.
• The admitted students will be required to submit their physical examination reports and other supporting documents.
• The college will conduct a final review and announce the admission list.

Physical Examination

• The admitted students will be required to undergo a physical examination at a designated hospital.
• The physical examination report must be submitted to the college within the specified timeframe.
