Unit Description

This unit explores Australian Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander community-based knowledge by bringing learners and community together via a compulsory 5-day residential workshop. Students will learn about respectful engagement with narratives from community and how this knowledge can be utilised respectfully to achieve successful outcomes as defined by and experienced by the members of those communities.

• Topic 1: Learn best practice in Indigenous community engagement
• Topic 2: Community-based Indigenous Knowledge processes
• Topic 3: Understanding Indigenous Knowledge in relationship with community
• Topic 4: Narratives of representation in relation to urban and rural community-based Indigenous Knowledge
• Topic 5: Rights and responsibilities within relationships with community
• Topic 6: Planning action through Indigenous Knowledge gained with community

Learning Outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

• Reflect on ethical and reciprocal relationships with community and practice respectful action that will allow Indigenous Knowledge to flow from community
• Critically analyse effective frameworks that allow Indigenous Knowledge to be synthesised through relationship with community
• Develop and apply models for positive social outcomes that transmit community-based Indigenous Knowledge Respectfully
