Unit of Study: NATM5003 Integrative Gastroenterology

Unit Description

Learners explore integrative approaches to gut health and organic and functional gastrointestinal disease. Evidence-based, patient-centred approaches are applied to various gastrointestinal conditions, including irritable bowel syndrome, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, inflammatory bowel disease, coeliac disease, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and cancers of the gastrointestinal tract. Learners appraise current gastrointestinal tests and procedures and are equipped with recognising acute gastrointestinal emergencies.

  • Discuss the aetiological and clinical differences between organic and functional gastrointestinal disorders
  • Critically reflect on the clinical relevance of current gastrointestinal tests and procedures
  • Critically evaluate integrative approaches for managing gastrointestinal conditions in the chronic and acute phases
  • Discuss acute gastrointestinal emergencies and appropriate courses of action suitable to your scope of practice within an integrative health care model
