Unit Description

This unit introduces the theories of group work and provides students with fundamental clinical skills used in group work, along with an understanding of how to design, implement, facilitate, and assess a group program.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:


  • Apply theoretical understanding of different approaches to group work, including to diverse and specific populations
  • Apply various theoretical frameworks in the context of specific group facilitation processes and settings
  • Design a sample component of a group program which effectively addresses a specific mental health or relational issue for a specific client group
  • Discuss contemporary group process, group dynamics, and group norms
