Unit Description

Develops a knowledge of employment law, industrial law and industrial relations relevant to legal advisers and human resource managers. Focuses on the Federal jurisdiction and key legal issues involving both the employer and employee.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:


  • evaluate the influence of economic, political, social and cultural factors on the continuing development of the industrial relations system
  • critically analyse the principles and policies underlying the Australian Industrial Relations system
  • explain and evaluate the legal framework of the Australian Industrial Relations system, including key legislative and common law principles
  • evaluate the legal issues and obligations involved in the employment relationship and in industrial disputes and apply the laws accurately to these
