- Enrolment information: To meet the training and assessment requirements set by the Australian Mediator and Dispute Resolution Accreditation Standards (AMDRAS) and be eligible for accreditation under AMDRAS, students must attend a minimum of 45 class contact hours. This includes workshops, tutorials, a compulsory three-day online residential, and an intensive assessment practicum, where students are required to perform as mediators for a minimum of 2 hours and be assessed as competent.
Unit Description
Examines the theory and spirit of mediation and the practical application of mediation skills. Students will examine the techniques to help resolve disputes and build the knowledge, skills, and ethical practice required to meet the training component of the Australian Mediator and Dispute Resolution Accredreditation Standards (AMDRAS). Through reflective practice and role-play simulations, students will examine the role of the mediator in the facilitative model and be required to display a practical application of various mediation skills required to respond to a range of disputes.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
- Explain and apply the skills, ethical practices, and legal requirements necessary to facilitate the mediation process and perform the role of the mediator.
- Explain and evaluate the nature of conflict, including the dynamics of power and violence, communication patterns in conflict and negotiation situations, and the influence of cross-cultural issues.
- Explain and evaluate appropriate mediator interventions and practical strategies to facilitate a safe and balanced environment throughout the mediation process.
- Evaluate and apply skills and ethical practices related to mediator impartiality and confidentiality in the mediator process.
