Unit Description

This unit introduces the professional practice area of neurological physiotherapy, integrating knowledge of neuroscience, motor control, and motor learning principles into a clinical reasoning framework.

1. Structured functional assessment in neurological physiotherapy
2. Bed mobility
3. Gait assessment and retraining in people with neurological conditions
4. Upper limb functional tasks
5. Assessment and retraining of balance
6. Introduction to pathophysiology and presentation of stroke and person-centred evidence-based physiotherapy management

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

• Integrate knowledge of neuroscience, motor control, and motor learning in the management of people with neurological conditions
• Select and perform physiotherapy assessment of people with neurological conditions integrating a clinical reasoning framework
• Effectively communicate with clients, the medical team, and other relevant stakeholders
• Design, implement, and evaluate person-centred physiotherapy management for people with neurological conditions, integrating collaborative interprofessional practice
