Unit Description
This unit introduces a theory-based understanding of literacy and numeracy in education and enables advanced knowledge in these fields to be applied to professional areas.
Unit Content
The unit covers the following modules:
- Literacy Reading, Viewing and Writing; Numeracy in everyday lives
- Literacy and numeracy demands: Speaking and listening; mathematics in everyday situations
- Numeracy Number and Algebra
- Numeracy Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability
- Literacy and Numeracy - Planning for teaching, programming and reporting, interpreting data; Contemporary understandings of literacy and numeracy
- Literacy and Numeracy - Supporting a diverse range of students with a range of strategies and resources

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
- Explain a theory-based understanding and knowledge of the role of literacy and numeracy in education
- Analyse the literacy and numeracy demands upon students together with other available data to identify areas of individual need
- Develop teaching plans that embody literacy and numeracy focuses, incorporating the effective use of literacy and numeracy strategies and assessment tasks to inform teaching
- Evaluate the role of digital technologies for effective teaching with literacy and numeracy for all students, including students with disability or additional learning needs
