Associate Degree of Allied Health

The Associate Degree of Allied Health is a two-year (full-time or part-time equivalent) entry-level course that provides students with the opportunity to prepare to study for a professional career pathway in allied health.

Course Overview

The Associate degree provides a pathway for eligible graduates into the Southern Cross University Bachelor of Podiatry; Bachelor of Speech Pathology; Bachelor of Occupational Therapy; or the Pedorthics pathway in the Bachelor of Clinical Sciences. There is also a generic pathway into the Bachelor of Clinical Sciences with credit (advanced standing) of up to 12 units.

Learning Outcomes and Graduate Attributes

Graduates of the Associate Degree of Allied Health will possess the following attributes:

• Knowledge of a discipline: Apply broad theoretical and technical knowledge and skills within a range of contexts in the field of Allied Health.
• Lifelong learning: Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for own learning and work in broad Allied Health contexts.
• Communication and social skills: Communicate information, concepts and solutions, individually and/or in a team, with an awareness of diverse cultural perspectives within a range of Allied Health contexts.
• Cultural competence: Communicate information, concepts and solutions, individually and/or in a team, with an awareness of diverse cultural perspectives within a range of Allied Health contexts.

Course Structure

The Associate Degree of Allied Health is offered through SCU College. All SCU College students are offered extra support through College Connect while undertaking this Associate degree.

Part A

Part C

After completing Parts A and B, complete all of the following units:

• CMM10580: The Australian Health Care System

Part D

Select a stream from the following and complete two units:

Occupational Therapy Stream

• HLT10582: Introduction to Occupational Therapy and Human Occupations
• HLT10584: Mobility and Personal Care Occupations

Speech Pathology Stream

• SPT10001: Introduction to the Speech Pathology Profession
• SPT10002: Phonetics and Linguistics for Speech Pathology

Podiatry/Pedorthics Stream

• PDT10001: Introduction to Podiatry and Pedorthics
• BIO10001: Functional Anatomy of the Lower Limbs and Foot and Ankle

Course Requirements

To be eligible for the award of Associate Degree of Allied Health, a candidate shall successfully complete the equivalent of sixteen (16) units (or 192 credit points) comprising all units listed in Part A, four units from Part B, all units from Part C, and two units from Part D with both units coming from the same stream.

Placements, Work Experience, and Study Hours

Some units may involve a placement within an allied health environment.

Specialisations, Majors, and Minors

Core studies include human anatomy and physiology, communication skills for the health sciences, and introductory science, psychology, and sociology for health professionals.

Availability

The Associate Degree of Allied Health is available at the Gold Coast campus.

Duration

The course duration is 2 years full-time or 4 years part-time.

The ATAR for this course is 45.
