Writing and Rhetoric
Program Overview
Introduction to the Writing and Rhetoric Program
The University of Southern Mississippi recognizes the integral role of writing in student success. Writing enables individuals to learn more about themselves and their society, connect with others, reflect on educational experiences, create new experiences, and effect change. The Writing and Rhetoric program is dedicated to providing effective writing experiences, from first-year writing classes to graduate coursework.
First-Year Writing Curriculum
First-year writers at the University of Southern Mississippi have the opportunity to participate in an exciting writing curriculum that engages them in writing and the world around them. This curriculum introduces students to the strategies, tools, and resources necessary to become successful communicators in a range of academic, professional, and public settings. Students in these classes explore conventions of writing, digital literacies, and the excitement of research and publication. Notably, first-year composition courses are often the smallest classes students take during their first semester, providing an opportunity to create a community of writers and a strong relationship with their instructors.
Undergraduate Professional Writing and Public Discourse
Students enrolled in undergraduate professional writing and public discourse courses focus on effective and ethical communication in a wide range of professional situations. They study, research, and analyze professional and public contexts, and create and use professional, public, and digital genres to develop written, oral, and visual communication skills. Courses such as Technical Communications, Digital Literacies, Texts, and Technologies, and Collaborative Learning and Tutoring Writing encourage students to explore literacies, texts, and technologies that make a difference beyond academia.
Program Focus
The program is dedicated to working with all writers at Southern Miss, emphasizing the importance of writing in all aspects of academic and professional life. The "Eagles Write!" initiative reflects this commitment, highlighting the university's support for writers across various disciplines and levels of study.
