Program Overview

Oceanography and Ocean Mapping

The University of Southern Mississippi offers a program in Oceanography and Ocean Mapping, which provides students with the opportunity to explore the depths of oceans and waterways, uncovering hidden secrets beneath the surface. Using advanced technology, students will map underwater terrains, discover ancient shipwrecks, monitor environmental changes, or locate valuable underwater resources.

What Will I Learn?

As students become proficient in hydrographic survey methods, they will measure and describe the physical features of oceans and waterways. The program covers:

  • Data analysis
  • Geographic information systems (GIS)
  • Hands-on experience aboard research vessels

Research Opportunities

The program provides hands-on experiences, allowing students to work on cutting-edge projects alongside experienced faculty. These research projects often involve the use of advanced hydrographic equipment and technology, preparing students for real-world applications. Students who graduate with a B.S. in Oceanography and Ocean Mapping will have an excellent pathway to continue their education and engage in advanced research through USM's Hydrographic Science MS program.

Internships

Students can participate in internships with various organizations, including:

  • NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) as a Hydrographic Survey Intern
  • U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office as a Hydrography Intern
  • Private Marine Survey Companies, such as Fugro, Teledyne Marine, and CSA Ocean Sciences, as a Hydrographic Survey Intern
  • Government Agencies, including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), as a Hydrographic Intern
  • Research Institutions, such as Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and USM's own research labs, as a Research Assistant
  • State and Local Government Agencies, including the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources and Local Coastal Management Programs, as a Marine Science Intern

Scholarships

Students enrolled in the USM Marine Science Hydrography Program can benefit from various scholarship opportunities, including:

  • The NOAA Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship, which supports students pursuing oceanic and atmospheric science careers
  • The Hydrographic Society of America (THSOA) Scholarship, which aids those focusing on hydrographic surveying
  • USM's internal scholarships, including the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) Scholarships for marine science students, which provide significant financial assistance and offer networking opportunities, internships, and mentoring

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the program will have the option to pursue diverse and high-demand career opportunities, from mapping ports, harbors, and offshore areas for government agencies, offshore industries, marine research institutions, and private companies involved in navigation and maritime activities. Upon completion, graduates will earn the internationally recognized IHO CAT B hydrographic certificate, which prepares them for careers in hydrography and marine science within government and private sectors.

Faculty Spotlight

Calvin Martin, with over 36 years of experience, has led the U.S. Navy Fleet Survey Team and pioneered hydrographic innovations. Now dedicated to education, he inspires students through school visits and community engagement, emphasizing that success in hydrography is attainable for all.

Availability

The Oceanography and Ocean Mapping BS program is available at the Gulf Park campus, which is part of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Career Options

Some potential career options for graduates include:

  • Naval Hydrographer at the Naval Oceanographic Office
  • Unmanned Systems Operator at the Naval Oceanographic Office
  • Hydrographic Surveyor in the government and private sectors
  • Cartographer or GIS Specialist in the government and private sectors
