Program Overview


Oceanography and Ocean Mapping Program

The Oceanography and Ocean Mapping program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in the field of oceanography and ocean mapping. The program is offered as an Associate of Science degree pathway, with the option to transfer to a Bachelor of Science degree program at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM).


Program Requirements

To complete the Associate of Science degree in Oceanography and Ocean Mapping at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC), students must take the following courses:


  • ENG 1113 or ENG 1114 (3 credits) - equivalent to USM's ENG 101
  • BIO 1134/L (4 credits) - equivalent to USM's BSC 110/L
  • CHE 1214/L (4 credits) - equivalent to USM's CHE 106/L
  • MAT 1313 or MAT 1323 (3 or 6 credits) - equivalent to USM's MAT 101/MAT 103
  • Select one of the following courses: ART 1113, DAN 1113, MUS 1113, SPT 2233 (3 credits) - equivalent to USM's ART 130, DAN 130, MUS 165, THE 100
  • ENG 1123 (3 credits) - equivalent to USM's ENG 102
  • CHE 1224/L (4 credits) - equivalent to USM's CHE 107/L
  • Select one of the following courses: HIS 1163, HIS 1173, PHI 2113, PHI 2143 (3 credits) - equivalent to USM's HIS 101, HIS 102, PHI 151, PHI 171
  • MAT 1613 (3 credits) - equivalent to USM's MAT 167
  • PHY 2414/L and PHY 2424/L (8 credits) - equivalent to USM's PHY 111/L and PHY 112/L
  • MAT 1623 (3 credits) - equivalent to USM's MAT 168
  • MAT 2113 (3 credits) - equivalent to USM's MAT 326
  • Select one of the following courses: ANR/SOC 2213, ECO 1113, PSC 1113, PSY 1513, SOC 2113 (3 credits) - equivalent to USM's ANT 101, ECO 101, PS 101, PSY 110, SOC 101
  • General Electives (10-13 credits) - any combination of courses to satisfy MGCCC degree requirements

Required Hours

Students must complete 60-62 hours of coursework at MGCCC to meet the requirements for the Associate of Science degree in Oceanography and Ocean Mapping.

Degree Requirements

To graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Oceanography and Ocean Mapping from USM, students must complete a total of 124 hours of coursework, including 30 hours of courses numbered 300 level or above. At least 25% of the credit hours needed for the degree must be earned at USM.
