Program Overview

Introduction to the Master of Science in Prosthetics & Orthotics

The Master of Science in Prosthetics and Orthotics (MSPO) program at Kennesaw State University is a highly regarded graduate program that enhances students' skills and knowledge with evidence-based clinical practice through research and technological innovation. This interdisciplinary program is housed in the Wellstar College of Health and Human Services and leverages the university's established strengths in clinical care, health sciences, and engineering.

Program Overview

The MSPO program is the only one of its kind in Georgia and one of just 14 nationwide. It offers students the opportunity to learn from experienced faculty and gain hands-on experience in clinical settings. The program's curriculum is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in prosthetics and orthotics, including clinical rotations, applied science and research, and clinical integration of technical and engineering innovations.

Major Curriculum Elements

  • Orthotics, Prosthetics, and Rehabilitation
  • Clinical rotations each semester
  • Applied Science and Research (Capstone Research Project)
  • Clinical integration of technical and engineering innovations

Program Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete the MSPO program will be able to:

  • Communicate patient care plans effectively
  • Develop treatment plans using physical examination and best practices
  • Design and fabricate orthoses/prostheses using appropriate materials
  • Evaluate and adjust clinical plans to support patient progress
  • Apply clinical policies and regulations to ensure safe practice

Merits and Value of the KSU Program

Employment Opportunities for MSPO Graduates

The U.S. Department of Education labels Prosthetics and Orthotics training a "national priority with a practitioner deficit." According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of orthotists and prosthetists will grow 17% from 2021 to 2031, much faster than most other occupations.

  • Typical Entry Level Education: Master's degree
  • Median Pay: $75,440/year or $36.27/hour
  • Job Demand: 11,100 available positions in 2021

Career Outlook and Accreditation

The MS in Prosthetics and Orthotics program at KSU is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), upon the recommendation of the National Commission on Prosthetic and Orthotic Education (NCOPE). This accreditation ensures that graduates are eligible for certification and licensure.
