Program Overview
Elementary Education Program
The Elementary Education program is a broad-field program designed to prepare teachers of young children, leading to certification for pre-kindergarten to grade five in Georgia. The program's cross-disciplinary nature, with special emphasis on content studies in mathematics and reading, corresponds to the broad and integrated nature of teaching in the elementary grades.
Program Description
The program provides candidates with an understanding of research-informed practices that are developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive, enabling them to become transformative practitioners in elementary education. The program's course requirements are designed to develop the reading and mathematical skills of young learners.
Admission Requirements
Students may initially declare an "Interest" based major in this subject, but must still meet additional requirements to be formally accepted into the degree program. These requirements include:

Double Owl Pathways
The program offers a Double Owl Pathway, which allows students to earn a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and a Master of Education in Elementary and Early Childhood Education.
Sample Classes
The program includes a range of sample classes, such as:
- ECE 3370: Child Development and Families
- This course covers child development theories, educational/early care environments, play, and learning from conception to middle childhood.
- ITEC 3100: Improving Learning with Technology in Elementary Classrooms
- This course teaches teacher candidates to use technologies to promote student achievement in elementary content area and technology literacy standards.
- ECE 4410: Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum
- This course focuses on integrating language arts across the curriculum and effective strategies for planning, implementing, and evaluating instruction in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in preschool through fifth grade.
- ECE 4465: Elementary Classroom Management and Learning Environments
- This course explores classroom management, guidance, and ways of dealing with challenging behaviors in developmentally and culturally appropriate ways.
College and Advising
