Clinical Fellowship Program

The Clinical Fellowship program at the Medical University of Graz is designed for well-educated doctors of medicine or dentistry from around the world who wish to gain clinical experience and enhance their qualifications. The program provides hands-on experience at University Hospital Graz over a period of three to twelve months.

Program Goals

The primary goal of the Clinical Fellowship is to expand specialist knowledge and skills in an experienced team at University Hospital Graz. The program is tailored to the individual's research and educational needs, with a focus on practical experience and skill development.

Eligibility and Requirements

• The program is open to doctors of medicine or dentistry from anywhere in the world.
• Applicants must provide proof of German and/or English language skills as part of the application process.
• Mastery of the German language is beneficial, as patient contacts and meetings are primarily conducted in German.
• The university department decides whether to accept a clinical fellow, and fellows may not work night and weekend shifts or be on call.
• Clinical fellows are integrated into the team in compliance with legal provisions and under supervision.

Program Structure

• The program duration is three to twelve months.
• Clinical fellows can participate in courses and journal clubs offered as part of the PhD and doctoral programs, subject to availability and workload.
• A clinical fellowship does not provide grounds for an employment contract with Med Uni Graz, and fellows must remain regularly employed by their home institution during the fellowship period.

Funding and Fees

• An administrative fee of EUR 700 per fellowship must be paid.
• Funding by funding authorities (official scholarship funds) is permitted, provided that the conditions for the clinical fellowship are met.
• The fellow is responsible for funding and organizing their stay.

Certificate and Evaluation

• The clinical fellow receives a certificate at the end of the fellowship.
• The program's effectiveness is increased by the fellow's mastery of the German language, as it facilitates patient contacts and introductions.

Application Process

• Potential fellows contact the departments/divisions/institutes directly with their CV and a letter of motivation.
• If there is interest in taking on the fellow and the necessary resources are available, the application process is initiated.
• A Letter of Intent must be submitted about 7 months before the clinical fellowship is scheduled to start.
• All required documents must be submitted at least 6 months before the start of the clinical fellowship.

Alternative Options

• For non-scientific stays up to 3 months, a volunteer doctor agreement with the hospital provider (KAGes Volontariat) may be possible.
• If the activity does not require direct patient contact and only involves observation and/or research, the observership program may be a more suitable choice.
