Program Overview


Central Michigan University Police Department Community Policing Program

The Central Michigan University Police Department Community Policing Program partners with students, faculty, and staff to educate and inform about crime prevention measures, personal safety, and issues that may affect safety on campus. The program encourages community members to take a proactive approach to safety.


Citizens Police Academy

The Citizens Police Academy allows the community to gain experience in various aspects of law enforcement. Members of the academy will gain insight into the operation of the police department and learn how the law enforcement community works together to maintain public safety.


Program Details

  • Classes are scheduled for five weeks, on Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.
  • The first class begins in March 2026, with dates to be determined.
  • Applications for the 2026 Citizen's Police Academy are open through March 1, 2026, or until the class is full.
  • Candidates will receive a confirmation email or phone call.

  • Patrol Operations
  • 911 operations
  • Emergency Services Team
  • Community Policing
  • Field Training Program

Application Requirements

To be eligible for the program, applicants must:


  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be able to pass a background check
  • Be a CMU student, faculty, staff, or local community member (preference will be given to CMU students, faculty, and staff)
  • 15-20 participants will be selected

  • Driver's license or state ID number and issuing state

  • Information regarding any misdemeanor or felony convictions
