Program Overview

Introduction to the Interior Design Program

The Interior Design program at Central Michigan University is a nationally-accredited program that prepares students for entry-level interior design practice, advanced study, and membership in professional interior design organizations.

Program Details

The program is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) and the National Association of Schools of Art & Design (NASAD). The B.A., B.S., or B.A.A. degrees granted by Central Michigan University meet the educational requirement for eligibility to sit for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification Examination (NCIDQ Exam).

Program Mission Statement

The Interior Design program at CMU emphasizes a holistic approach to providing balance between the broader aspects of human environmental relations and the specific requirements needed for practicing within the interior design profession.

Program Structure

The program includes a series of design studios, including:

  • Introductory Interior Design Studio: Students learn about design theory, concepts, materials, model building techniques, and space planning for residential and commercial interiors.
  • Special User Groups Interior Design Studio: Students learn about the special environmental needs of people with disabilities, the elderly, and children in order to create effective design solutions for these populations.
  • Hospitality and Retail Interior Design Studio: Students apply visual, conceptual, and functional design processes to commercial hospitality and retail interior environments in collaboration with classmates.
  • Mixed-Use Commercial Interior Design Studio: Students integrate current trends into mixed-use commercial interior projects with increasing scope and complexity, completing projects in collaborative groups to develop teamwork skills.

Hands-on Experience

Students engage in community and university activities outside the classroom, including:

  • Competing in design competitions
  • Participating in service-learning projects
  • Completing an internship experience
  • Connecting with professionals in A+D firms and corporations
  • Attending field trips
  • Presenting at conferences
