Program Overview
Introduction to the Bachelor of University Technology in Biological Engineering
The Bachelor of University Technology (BUT) in Biological Engineering is a three-year program offered by the University Institute of Technology (IUT) in Saint-Brieuc, France. This program is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in biological engineering, preparing them for careers in the food industry, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics.
Objectives and Competencies
The BUT in Biological Engineering aims to develop professionals competent in the fields of agro-food, health, and environment. The program focuses on providing students with the necessary skills to work in these sectors, including:
- Realizing analyses and experiments in biology
- Managing quality, hygiene, safety, and environment in food and biotechnology industries
- Organizing food and biomolecule production
- Innovating in food science and biotechnology
Program Structure and Content
The program is divided into three years, with a combination of theoretical and practical courses. The first year consists of 35 weeks of classes, the second year includes 25 weeks of classes and 10 weeks of internship or alternation, and the third year offers 17 weeks of classes and 35 weeks of internship or alternation. The curriculum covers various subjects, including:
- Biochemistry
- Microbiology
- Food technology and sensory evaluation
- Applied mathematics, physics, and statistics
- Immunology
- Management and legislation

Duration and Organization of the Program
The program lasts for three years, with the possibility of alternation starting from the second year. A typical week at the IUT includes:
- Two days of practical work in small groups
- Three days of classes and directed work in half-promotions, promoting interactive and personalized teaching
Internships and Alternation
Students have the opportunity to complete their BUT in Biological Engineering through a classic pathway (initial training) or alternation, chosen by the student. The program includes:
- A 10-week internship in France during the second year
- A 14-week internship in the third year (in France or abroad) For students opting for alternation, a specific support system is in place to help them find a contract. An antenna of the SFCA service, dedicated to alternation training, is available at the IUT to guide students before and during their alternation.
Evaluation Method
The control of knowledge is carried out through continuous assessment throughout the training, including:
- Written and oral evaluations
- Practical work
- Projects and presentations
- Missions in companies, evaluated through a report and an oral presentation
Diploma and Career Opportunities
Upon completion of the three-year program, students receive a level Bac+3 diploma, awarded by the University. This diploma attests to their mastery of the necessary skills to work in their field of study and provides a solid foundation for further studies in a master's program or specialized training. Graduates of the BUT in Biological Engineering have a wide range of career opportunities in various sectors, including:
- Research and development
- Production
- Quality control
- Hygiene, safety, and environment
