Program Overview
National Initiative on Undergraduate Science (NIUS)
The National Initiative on Undergraduate Science (NIUS) is a program offered by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research.
NIUS (Physics) and NIUS (Astronomy)
The NIUS program is available in two subjects: Physics and Astronomy. The application form for both programs is common, and applicants can indicate their preference for one or both subjects.
Application Process
To apply for the NIUS program, applicants must follow these steps:
- Create an applicant profile
- Activate their account by clicking on an activation link sent to their registered email ID
- Log in to their account using their registered email ID and password
- Fill in all details and submit the application form
- A link for the Confidential Assessment Form will be sent to the referees after submission
- The application form must be submitted by March 8, 2026, and the confidential assessment must be submitted by referees by March 10, 2026
Required Documents
Applicants must keep the following documents ready before applying:
- A softcopy of their recent photograph (.jpg/.png file of size not exceeding 2 MB)
- Scanned photo/image of their recent Bonafide certificate of affiliation as a first-year student from their current college/institution (.jpg/.png file of size not exceeding 2 MB)
- All marksheets for X, XII (and UG Semester 1, if available) as a single PDF file
- Full contact address for themselves and their institution, including pincode
- Name, Designation, Department, Institute, Email ID of two referees who would be filling the Confidential Assessment Form
Selection Criteria
The list of selected students will be made available on the NIUS website by 31 March 2026, and an email invitation will be sent to each selected student by 7 April 2026.
