Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Program

The University of Oklahoma College of Medicine's Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine fellowship program aims to train the next generation of leaders in the field of neonatology. The program seamlessly integrates discovery and application of new knowledge with structured mentorship, providing a collaborative environment that fosters training of fellows in broad disciplines such as clinical care, education, translational and basic research, advocacy, and quality improvement.

Program Details

• The program has 9 ACGME-approved training positions.
• It is an NRMP participant and fills 3 new spots each year.
• Applications are accepted through ERAS using the Common Application Form.
• Requirements include:
  • Personal Statement
  • 3 letters of recommendation (1 from the Residency Program Director)
  • Photograph
• Applicants must have successfully completed an ACGME-approved pediatric residency program.
• The program sponsors applicants holding either a J-1 Visa under the sponsorship of the ECFMG or a permanent immigrant visa ("green card").

Curriculum

The curriculum includes:

• 52 weeks of clinical service during the 3-year fellowship, including cardiac care and maternal fetal medicine
• High-risk and neurodevelopmental follow-up clinics
• Weekly protected academic afternoons with lectures on neonatal-perinatal physiology & medicine, mortality review, critically appraised topics, and board review
• Weekly Pediatric and OB Grand Rounds
• Collaborative conferences with Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Pediatric Medical/Surgical subspecialists
• Monthly Professional Development seminars
• Monthly Journal Clubs
• Additional specialized training, including:
  • Annual neonatal ECMO (ECLS) training course
  • Procedural bootcamp for first-year fellows
  • Scholarly activity bootcamp for first-year fellows in research methodology and development of IRBs, protocols, and grants
  • Neonatal hemodynamics elective
  • Tele-Resuscitation Symposium

Fellows receive:

• Innovative study materials, including subscriptions to The Incubator Podcast (Neonatology Review) and NeoReviews
• Travel support to regional and national meetings
• Educational stipend, quarterly meal allowance, and paid parking
• Reimbursement for DEA registration, state medical license, and NRP (re)-certification
• Opportunity to pursue a Master's degree in Public Health or Clinical & Translational Science

The objective is to develop expertise in providing evidence-based care to all infants and to provide opportunities for scholarly pursuits, exposing trainees to unique resources at the University of Oklahoma and the wider neonatal-perinatal medicine community.
