Introduction to the GMAT Program
The GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is a standardized English language proficiency test required by numerous MBA programs and further studies worldwide. Unlike the TOEFL or IELTS, the GMAT is not a pure language test but primarily measures analytical and logical skills.
Overview of the GMAT
- The test duration is 2 hours and 15 minutes, with an optional 10-minute break.
- The test is entirely computer-based, using an English language keyboard layout (QWERTY).
- A preliminary result is available immediately after the test, with the final result available within one to three days.
- The GMAT certificate is valid for five years.
- Before the test, candidates can specify up to five universities to receive their test results, with additional universities incurring a fee.
Structure of the GMAT
The GMAT consists of three main sections:
Quantitative Reasoning
- Duration: 45 minutes
- Content: 21 questions covering fractions, percents, ratios, algebra, statistics, story problems, and number properties
- Note: Basic arithmetic and elementary algebra skills are required, but correct answers depend on logical and analytical skills rather than underlying mathematical knowledge. Calculators are not allowed.
Verbal Reasoning
- Duration: 45 minutes
- Content: 23 questions focusing on critical/analytical thinking, comprehension, and inference
- Note: Questions are based on reading comprehension and critical reasoning, evaluating the ability to understand and analyze written material and arguments. Specialized knowledge of the subject matter is not required.
Data Insights
- Duration: 45 minutes
- Content: 20 questions covering quantitative skills, verbal skills, data analysis, and logical reasoning
- Note: This section assesses the ability to apply data to real business scenarios. An integrated calculator is provided for this section.
Registration and Fees
- The current registration fee is 275 Euros.
- Multiple test dates are offered each month in Vienna.
- Registration and detailed information are available on the OEAD website.
- Note: Registration through the language learning center is not possible. A valid personal ID is required for the test.
Preparation for the GMAT
- Recommended preparation time is up to three months for those with good English skills, and less for those with skills above the B2 level.
- The official GMAT website offers free preparation software (GMAT Official Starter Kit + Practice Exams 1 & 2) at mba.com/gmat-exam-prep.
- Official materials, such as the GMAT Official Guide, are highly recommended. It's advisable to work with the latest editions since questions change annually.
- Kaplan books are also suitable for preparation and offer free tests, requiring online registration at kaptest.com/gmat/free/gmat-practice-test-options.
- The website gmatclub.com provides useful tips and tricks for the GMAT.
English Language Proficiency
- To assess if your English skills are sufficient for the GMAT, you can take a free electronic language test (Oxford Online Placement Test) at the language learning center.
- If your English level is below B2, a longer preparation time is recommended. Enhance your skills through:
- Participation in the tandem program
- Mobile language learning with Busuu (free registration required)
- Reading current newspapers and the Business Spotlight learning magazine, available in the language learning center's lounge
- Intensive reading of English-language business magazines, as the GMAT is styled similarly
