Introduction to the 2026 Asian Future Leaders Scholarship Program

The 2026 Asian Future Leaders Scholarship Program (AFLSP) is an initiative by Kyoto University, launched in 2014, in collaboration with the Kyoten Institute and the Bai Xian Education Foundation. Program Details

  • Duration and Benefits: The program offers a two-year scholarship to students enrolled in the graduate school of Kyoto University, starting in October 2026. The scholarship includes a monthly stipend of approximately 150,000-220,000 Japanese yen, plus tuition fees. The actual amount may vary due to exchange rates.
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • Applicants must be graduates (or soon-to-be graduates) of a bachelor's degree from a recognized university, aged 35 or under at the time of application.
    • They must intend to enroll in a master's degree program at Kyoto University in October 2026.
    • Proficiency in English is required, with a TOEFL iBT score of 90 or above (or equivalent).
  • Application Documents:
    • Scholarship application form.
    • Research proposal (in any format).
    • Short essay on a specific issue in the modern Asia-Pacific region.
    • Letter of recommendation.
    • Recent photo.
    • Language proficiency certificate (JLPT, TOEFL, etc.).
    • Bachelor's degree certificate (or expected graduation certificate for current students).
    • Proof of enrollment in the bachelor's program (for current students).
    • Transcript (in English, including class ranking).
    • Agreement to the regulations for foreign student scholarships.
    • Admission permission from Kyoto University's graduate school.
