Program Overview

Introduction to the Hans Christoph Binswanger Fellowship and Prize

The University of St. Gallen is offering the Hans Christoph Binswanger Fellowship and the associated Hans Christoph Binswanger Prize. This fellowship is directed at early-career researchers in the social and humanities sciences and aims to highlight the importance of economics as a science that serves life. The fellowship includes a nine-month research stay at the University of St. Gallen and is endowed with a financial support of CHF 90,000.

Eligibility and Requirements

The fellowship and prize are aimed at early-career researchers who are close to completing their doctorate, are in the post-doc phase, or hold a temporary academic position as an early-career researcher (e.g., junior professor, tenure-track position). The award for the fellowship and prize is based on a scientific work with an integrative character in the following areas:

  • Importance of nature in the economic process
  • Function and properties of money in the economic system
  • Discussion of the growth imperative in modern monetary economies
  • Economic interpretation of significant works in literature, art, and philosophy
  • Proposals for the transition to a more sustainable economy, taking into account the growth dynamics of modern monetary economies

Structure of the Fellowship

Two-thirds of the time available during the fellowship is intended for the further development of one's own research. One-third of the time is allocated for participation in the interdisciplinary project "Digital Sovereignity", which is conducted in collaboration with 6 to 8 other fellows at the University of St. Gallen. This broadly based project offers the opportunity to bring one's own research focuses into collaboration. An important goal of the project is the exchange with an interdisciplinary group of scientists and the establishment of a corresponding network.
