Isothermal Near-Net Shape Forging of Aluminum Alloys: Advances and Inventions

The program "Isothermal Near-Net Shape Forging of Aluminum Alloys: Advances and Inventions" is designed to focus on the near-net shape forging of aluminum alloys, covering the process as well as tool design. The course will emphasize modelling and optimization to produce defect-free products with minimal consumption of resources.


Teaching Faculty

The teaching faculty for this program includes:


  • Dr. Pavel A. Petrov, Head of Department of Metal Forming and Additive Technologies at Moscow Polytechnic University, Russia. His research interest is metal forming of aluminum and magnesium alloys.
  • Prof. U.S. Dixit, Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, India. His research interest is modelling of manufacturing processes.

Overview

There is a growing pressure for adopting sustainable and green engineering practices. Material scientists are developing high strength to weight ratio materials for reducing the consumption of raw material as well as energy. Aluminum alloys are very attractive among various classes of lightweight materials. The focus of this program is to produce products by forging that are very precise and require minimal further machining or no machining at all, known as near-net shape forging, precision forging, or flash-less forging.


Objectives

The primary objectives of the course are:


  1. To expose participants to the latest developments in micro-machining processes
  2. To inculcate participants in the complexity of the small scale
  3. To train the participants in the small scale material modelling of high deformation process
  4. To train the participants in applying such skills in practice

The program schedule includes the following modules:


  • Module A: Basics of Isothermal Near-net Shape Forging
  • Module B: Material Parameters Identification for CAE-Simulation of Isothermal Forging Process
  • Module C: Process Design & Optimization
