M.A. in Applied English Studies

The M.A. in Applied English Studies is a Master's degree program that combines the strengths of English Language Teaching and Professional and International Communication. It is designed for individuals who want to develop their professional and academic skills in language education professions or other communication careers.

Introduction

The program is suitable for people who are interested in becoming English teachers and/or communication experts with profound knowledge, skills, and attitudes concerning pedagogy, language and communication theories, education and communication technology, and research abilities.

Program Overview

The program aims to produce graduates with effective English skills and knowledge of the principles of Applied English, professionalism in English language contexts, the ability to conduct Applied English research, and life-long learning skills with a sense of social responsibility.

Tracks

Candidates can choose to study in the English Language Teaching Track (ELT) or the Professional Communication Track (PC) or tailor elective courses from both tracks to suit their interest. Both tracks are offered on weekdays and weekends.

Study Plans

The program is designed to be completed in 2 years. Students study 2 semesters per academic year for the weekday program and 3 semesters per academic year for the weekend program. The total number of credits required is 36.

Graduation Requirements

To graduate, students must:

• Complete at least 36 credits
• Obtain a minimum grade point average of 3.00
• Pass the thesis defense and disseminate their studies in the form of a research paper or conference proceedings for Plan A
• Pass the comprehensive exam for Plan B1 and B2

Admission

The program welcomes applicants who hold a Bachelor's degree in any field from an accredited academic institution. Applicants can choose to study in the weekdays or weekends program. Admission is open all year round, and selection is based on English proficiency and an interview.

The admission procedure consists of two aspects: English proficiency and an interview. Applicants can take the internal language proficiency test or produce evidence of having achieved the required IELTS or TOEFL scores. The interview aims to explore applicants' attitudes and suitability.
