Graduate Diploma of Midwifery
The Graduate Diploma of Midwifery is a postgraduate coursework program designed for Registered Nurses who wish to pursue a career in midwifery. The program is offered by Charles Darwin University and is available to domestic students only.

Entry Requirements
To apply for this course, applicants must:
- Hold current registration with AHPRA as a Division 1 Registered Nurse (with no notations)
- Have a completed Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent international qualification
Additional Admission Requirements
- Applicants will be ranked based on subquotas and academic merit
- To be considered for the NT residency and/or First Nations subquotas, applicants must attach the required statutory declaration when submitting their application
- Successful applicants to the program must hold a current registration as a Registered Nurse (Division 1, with no notations) with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA)
- Applicants must have met the NMBA English language requirements of an IELTS score of 7 and above
English Language Requirements
- DOMESTIC STUDENTS: All applicants to nursing and midwifery courses are required to meet the English Language Skills Registration Standard as outlined by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA)
- English language proficiency can be evidenced for this course by one of the following:
- Completing a declaration that English is your primary language
- Sitting an English language proficiency test
- Being an AHPRA registered enrolled nurse
Course Structure
The Graduate Diploma of Midwifery is an 18-month, full-time program delivered over three consecutive semesters. The program includes:
- Core units: 7 units totaling 80 credit points
- Mandatory simulation blocks: 32 hours at the beginning of each semester
- Clinical placements: arranged by CDU, subject to availability at healthcare facilities
Career Opportunities
Graduates of this program have the opportunity to work in both public and private maternity care settings in Australia. Career opportunities include:
- Privately practicing midwife
- Clinical midwife in a maternity hospital
- Midwifery educator
- Midwifery manager
Professional Recognition
Graduates of this course will be eligible to apply for registration as a Registered Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA)
Fees
Both Commonwealth supported (CS) and full fee (FF) places are available for this course.
- Commonwealth Supported Places: Available to students who meet one of the following residency requirements:
- Be an Australian citizen
- Be a New Zealand citizen
- Be an Australian permanent visa holder
- Be an eligible former permanent humanitarian visa holder
- Non-Commonwealth Supported Places: Full fee paying places are available in this course
