Master of Teaching Birth to Five Years

The Master of Teaching Birth to Five Years is a postgraduate degree that enables students to become accredited early childhood teachers. This course is designed for individuals who hold a bachelor's degree in a relevant field other than education.

Entry Requirements

Admission Criteria

Successful completion of a recognized bachelor degree or equivalent international qualification with at least one-year equivalent full-time study in an area relevant to early childhood/primary curriculum.

Additional Admission Requirements

Applicants must complete the Teaching Capabilities Statement to demonstrate suitability for study and work in the teaching profession.

International Entry Pathway

Applicants who have completed the CDU Accelerated International Masters Qualifying Program (ZAMQP2, ZAMQP1) are eligible for entry.

English Language Requirements

• DOMESTIC STUDENTS: To gain entry into Charles Darwin University, all Higher Education applicants must satisfy the University's English Language Proficiency Requirements for their chosen course of study.
• INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: The minimum English language requirement for this course is met by either two years of higher education study in English in either Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom, or United States of America, or undertaking one of the following English language tests and obtaining the minimum requirements listed.

Students will complete a minimum of 60 days of professional experience.

Professional Recognition

Commonwealth Supported places are available in this course to students who meet one of the following residency requirements:

• Be an Australian citizen who will complete some of your course of study while resident in Australia.
• Be a New Zealand citizen.
• Be an Australian permanent visa holder.
• Be an eligible former permanent humanitarian visa holder who studies the entire course while living in Australia.

International Tuition Fees

The annual tuition fee for full-time study in 2026 is AUD $32,760.00. This equates to $4,095.00 per 10 credit point unit (0.125 EFTSL). These fees are subject to increases annually, effective at the start of each calendar year.

What Will I Study?

Students will study a range of units, including professional experience in a range of schools and early learning settings. The units are designed to develop skills, strategies, and dispositions for facilitating positive development and learning in the children students will teach.

Course Structure

Students can study the Master of Teaching Birth to Five Years online as an external student, on campus as an internal student, or as a mix of both. All students access learning materials online and are encouraged to interact in a range of modes to develop professional dialogue and networks.

Essential Requirements

• Working with Children Check: A Working with Children Check is required before students can undertake their practical placements.
• National Police Clearance: In some jurisdictions, preservice teachers may be required to have a National Police Clearance prior to commencing placement.
