Introduction to the Regulation and Integration of Renewable Energy Course

The Florence School of Regulation offers a comprehensive training course on the Regulation and Integration of Renewable Energy, providing a thorough introduction to the topic with the latest updates, including developments in policy and regulation in the renewables industry and research.

Objective of the Course

The objective of this course is to carefully examine the current and future role of renewable energy as a fundamental element of a sustainable, competitive, and secure power industry, as well as the regulatory mechanisms needed to integrate Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in a liberalized electricity system.

Course Content

The course will answer the following questions:

• What are the most important elements of governance in the European Energy Union with a focus on renewable energy sources, including the Clean Energy Package, Fit-for-55, and RePowerEU?
• What are the most prominent renewable energy support mechanisms and best practice designs in a market-based environment?
• What are the electricity market design implications and alternatives in view of a massive implementation of renewable energy into the market and the grids?
• What are Contracts for Difference (CfDs) and what is their role in electricity market design?

• Regulatory affairs department of energy companies, including power generation companies, Transmission System Operators (TSOs), and Distribution System Operators (DSOs)

No formal background on energy regulation is required. An educational background in engineering, economics, or law is strongly recommended. The training is in English.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

• Inspect national renewable energy goals and how they are synchronized with Europe's action plan, also from the perspective of the new governance of energy and climate policy
• Categorize the growing technical and economic challenges and implications for the integration of renewable energy by TSOs or DSOs

• Introduction to the governance of renewable energy
• Introduction to the economics of renewable energy sources
• Market integration of renewable energy – general concepts
• Supporting RES uptake – market-based investment in generation capacity
• Integration of RES in liberalized wholesale electricity markets – market-based dispatch of generation
• Impact and integration of RES in electricity system operation and grid planning
• Trends in global renewable energy markets & Case studies of regulation and market integration in liberalized electricity systems
• Beyond electricity: Renewables integration across sectors
• New policy developments in the EU and their impact on renewable energy

Fees and Cancellation Policy

• General fee: 3,000 EUR
• Associate Donor 10%: 2,700 EUR
• Major Donor 20%: 2,400 EUR
• Star Donor 25%: 2,250 EUR A 10% discount is available for groups of 5 or more participants from the same organization. Paid registration fee is non-refundable. However, registrant substitution may be made up to 20 days before the course's start date.

Logistic Information

The fee covers participation in the training, coffee breaks, lunches, and any meals or social activities outlined in the event programme. Travel and accommodation costs are not included. The course will be held in Florence on 27-29 October 2026.

FSR Annual Scholarships

Each year, the Florence School of Regulation – Energy and Climate (FSR Energy & Climate) awards scholarships for a wide variety of training courses targeting a broad audience of professionals and academics. Applications will be assessed by a Selection Committee of FSR members on a yearly basis. The successful candidates will be informed after February 2026 and will be provided with all relevant information on how to enroll in the online course or residential training of their choice.
