Honors in Greece

Program Information

The Honors in Greece program is a unique opportunity for first-year Honors students to spend two weeks in Athens, Greece, as part of their fall quarter. Students will visit historic sites, discuss the consequences of ancient ideas on modern issues with Honors faculty, and explore contemporary Greek culture.


Course Details

Students in the Honors in Greece program will register for the following courses:


  • HNRS 101: The Big Picture (1 credit)
  • HNRS 103: Navigating the Human Experience (4 credits, Humanities GUR)
  • HNRS 205: Colloquium in History (5 credits, BCGM GUR)
  • HNRS 201: Colloquium in Philosophy (3 credits, Humanities GUR)
  • HNRS 237: Democracy: A Love Story (3 credits, Travel)

Program Structure

The program takes place over two weeks in November, with students spending the remainder of the fall quarter on campus. Incoming Honors students typically receive more information about the program via email in April or May prior to starting at Western.


Total Credits

The total credits for the program are 16.


Sites to Visit

Students will have the opportunity to visit major sites in Athens, Greece, and the surrounding region, including:


  • The Acropolis and Agora in Athens
  • Mycenae in the Argolid
  • The battlefield where Greek freedom was lost in Boeotia at the hands of Philip of Macedon and his teenage son, Alexander

General University Requirements (GURs)

Many of the courses in the Honors in Greece program satisfy General University Requirements (GURs).
